They, along with their tannins, can provide a natural antibiotic. Their various holes can serve as a safe haven for shrimplets and other beneficial organisms.  They will break down overtime and provide an excellent food source to microorganisms resulting in an overall healthier tank. 

It is highly recommended to boil these botanicals for one minute before adding to your tank just to be safe.
